The friendship between Mammootty and Pinarayi Vijayan is well known to those who know him well. Mammootty's presence was noted when Pinarayi was sworn in as the Chief Minister in 2016. Mammootty's colleague and director Joy Mathew says that he does not like anyone criticizing Pinarayi Vijayan. Joy Mathew says that they have often quarreled over it.
