Oppam (2016) | Malayalam
The film is about a blind elevator operator who has to prove his innocence after being framed for murder. Mohanlal plays the role of the blind man jayaraman. He totally justifies the character with his brilliant performance as a blind man. Jayaraman (Mohanlal) being blind did have a heightened sense of smell, hearing and touch. The movie is a crime thriller that promises a suspense for the audience. The story revolves around jayaraman, Krishna moorthy (Nedumudi Venu) a retired judge, Vasu (samuthirakani), Nandhini (Baby meenakshi), Ganga (Anusree Nair) and Devayani (Vimala Raman). It is technically polished and a visualy appealing movie. Mohanlal's screen presence not in the least is effected by the physical challenge but adds to him the skills to live up to the hero image that has been built up since the 90's. It's quite overwhelming at times as we could start wondering like his co actors do on screen, if he can actually 'see'. It is worth considering whether the films like oppam are actually reflecting a social reality or simply going after a regressive trend. Overall it is an entertainer and a thriller movie.
